The Paton-Churdan girls scored nearly twice their season average against Woodbine in Churdan Friday, but it wasn’t enough for a win as the Woodbine Tigers topped their season average by 28 points in a game that went into overtime. The final score was 70-62.
The Tigers were ahead 17-10 after the first quarter and 25-20 at intermission. Their lead was still five points after three quarters, 40-35. Fourteen Tiger points and 19 Rocket points tied the score at 54 at the end of regulation play. The Tigers put up 16 points to the Rockets’ eight in the overtime.
The Rockets had three players score in double digits – Jenna Beyers scored 29, Grace Geisler scored 14 and Megan Carey scored 10. Ty Smith scored seven points and Briana Jewett scored two. Beyers led in rebounds with 10 and Geisler led in assists with seven. As a team, the Rockets shot at 42 percent from the floor and 58 percent from the free throw line. They committed 30 turnovers.
It would been the Rockets’ second win for the season. They are 1-12 overall, while Woodbine is 6-10 overall.
Had the boys been able to share points with the girls the results would have been different. The Paton-Churdan boys had plenty of points to share as they won 76-29, extending their winning streak to five.
The score was tied at eight with three minutes to play in the first quarter, but the Tigers didn’t score again until midway through the second quarter. The Rockets were ahead 39-14 at intermission. They were ahead 61-24 after three quarters.
P-C junior Charlie Minnehan and freshman Ty Miller scored 20 points each. Minnehan averages 5.7 points per game and Miller averages 3 points. Junior Jake Berns scored 16 points, right at his season average. Junior Joe Towers scored eight points, sophomore Eric Thompson and senior Trevor Bundt scored five each, and senior Chase Juergensen added two points. Juergensen led in rebounds with 10, followed by Berns with nine. Towers led in assists with six and Berns led in steals with six.
The Paton-Churdan boys are now 7-6 overall while the Woodbine Tigers are 2-14 overall. The Rockets have three games in four days coming up. They play at Boyer Valley Saturday, at Anita (CAM) on Monday, and then at home against Coon Rapids-Bayard on Tuesday.
